Communications Commission announces the “Truth or Fiction?” Contest for 9th, 10th and 11th Grade Pupils

The Communications Commission and the Media Academy have announced the “Truth or Fiction?” contest, which is designed to develop critical thinking, analysis and fact-checking skills among young people. The contest will take place between 4 May and 30 June, and will be open to all 9th, 10th and 11th grade pupils. The winners will be chosen by a competent jury panel, and will receive impressive prizes. The first-place winner will get an iPhone 12 Pro, the second-place winner will be given a New iPad Pro, while the third-place winner will receive modern wireless Beats Studio 3 earphones.

In parallel to the contest, the Medial Literacy Department of the Communications Commission will hold online training sessions at around 30 schools, aiming to provide youngsters with information and skills necessary to verify facts and identify fake news.

As part of the competition, participants are required to identify fake news in Georgian media space – internet, television and print media – that had not yet been confirmed as inaccurate. The students have to explain how they identified the information, present the relevant source and establish real facts surrounding the case.

Pupils can submit their entries between 4 May and 30 June 2021 on the following link: http://tiny.cc/oggb6y

Participants can choose the format of the assignment themselves. The assignment can have the form of a video, multimedia work, presentation or an alternative creative form. In any case, all works must include a list of used sources.

Rules and other details of the “Truth or Fiction?” competition can be viewed on the media literacy Facebook page and the homepage of ComCom www.comcom.ge

This will be the fifth edition of the “Truth or Fiction?” contest. Up to 500 pupils and students have participated in the past contests. Four editions of the media literacy competition have been held for school pupils, and one for BA students. The Communications Commission has organised certified training for the outstanding students, helping them enhance their qualifications.
