According to the Freedom Barometer, Freedom of Press has improved in Georgia

According to the Freedom Barometer, which is a project of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, freedom of press has improved in Georgia and the country holds a leading position with regards to freedom of speech. In the aforementioned report, Georgia scored 5 points in 2018, improving to 7.1 points by 2019. 

The report states that freedom of press in Georgia is protected by the constitution, and that in recent years, this right was generally upheld in practice. The Freedom Barometer also states that in spite of problems remaining to be addressed, there is a wide variety of broadcast, print and online media outlets, and that citizens are provided with diverse opinions.

The report also mentions the verdict of the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg regarding the television company Rustavi-2, adding that two new opposition-leaning channels (Mtavari  Arkhi and Formula) were easily set up on the base of Rustavi-2.

According to the Freedom Barometer, Georgia had the highest progress rate, posting the best figure among 45 countries last year. Overall, Georgia ranks 27th in the index of free countries with 69.10 points. In 2018, Georgia ranked 28th with 64.10 points.
