Commission Releases a Statement

According to the information spread in media, the Committee of Communications of so-called South Ossetia and the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of Russia have signed an agreement. In accordance with the agreement, the dialing numbers of South Ossetia will begin with 7, fixed line code will be 850, and 998 for mobile codes. The signed agreement is to remain active until South Ossetia enters the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and gets its own international dialing code.

The Georgian National Communications Commission explains that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the UN (United Nations) specialized agency for information and telecommunication technologies. Georgia has been the ITU member since 1993. The territorial integrity of Georgia is recognized by the UN (United Nations), as well as by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and other international organizations, accordingly entering ITU by so-called South Ossetia as an independent country is impossible without Georgia’s consent.

Georgia officially applies to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and notifies of telephone codes assignment by Russia with violation of international norms.
