Communications Commission presents the “Hello Ruby” Teaching Method for Public and Private Schools

The Communications Commission held a training course for primary school teachers on the subject of “Hello Ruby” – a successful Finnish series of books that have been adopted by 25 countries. From October 2019, Georgian pupils will also be able to use the books to learn the basics of computer sciences. Public and private school teachers attending the training course familiarised themselves with the teaching method that is based on the books Adventures in Coding and Journey inside the Computer. Representatives from the Media Literacy Department of the Communications Commission presented the “Hello Ruby” teaching syllabus and recommendations. The lesson plan was devised together with programme author Linda Liukas and adapted to Georgian schools.

“Hello Ruby” is a series of books that are used by primary school children to learn the basics of computer sciences, as well as critical assessment and analysis skills. Two of the books - Adventures in Coding and Journey inside the Computer – have been translated and published in 25 languages. The Communications Commission obtained the publishing rights in Georgian language from the author herself. The 33-year-old Finnish programmer Linda Liukas visited Georgia in April, holding a certified training course and workshop for 60 teachers and trainers in devising a teaching plan using the “Hello Ruby” books.

During the course of 2019, the Commission and the Ministry of Education will jointly implement five media literacy projects for children, involving parents and teachers.

The aforementioned projects have been selected based on the analysis of successful practices from EU countries, assessment of their effectiveness and the potential for their implementation in Georgia.
