Informed Citizens, Informed Choice: More than Half a Million People use the Mediacritic.ge Platform in the Space of one Year

Last year, the Media Academy of the Communications Commission established the platform Mediacritic.ge, which acted as a guide between the public and the media. For the past year, this unprecedented step towards the development of media critique has served to enable critical perception of information and the making of sensible and informed choices. During this short period of time, the number of visitors to the platform has already exceeded half a million. Apart from strengthening the media, the materials found on the platform will also help establish a professional circle of media critics.

Despite the challenges that existed in Georgia and the rest of the world in 2020, the media critique platform achieved impressive results during its first year of operation. Providing the public with professional analysis of media products involves three main areas, for which the statistics are as follows: 58 articles (analytical part of media critique), 63 blogs (section for creative products) and 178 reviews (focussing on daily news). Furthermore, the number of unique visitors to the Mediacritic.ge platform from 23 December 2019 to this day exceeded half a million, while the materials on the media critique Facebook page were viewed by 1,071,155 users.

These results point to the topicality of the platform and clearly shows how important constructive media critique is for our citizens. In the age of fake news, uncontrolled streams of information can only be effectively dealt with by media-literate citizens who always make informed choices. Since it is impossible to enhance media literacy levels without healthy media critique, the Commission deemed it necessary to establish a platform where the public could access unbiased, high-standard media critique.

With help from media experts and professional journalists, the Media Academy devised the media critique editorial code, which serves to support the academic processes at the Media Academy and develop the field of media critique in general. From the very beginning, the media critique platform has been guided by the principles and high standards of journalism outlined within the code.

Remember: media literacy is the main weapon in the fight against modern day challenges, and reasonable choices are made by informed citizens.
