Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Expands Top-Level Domain Names (TLDs)

 

The governing board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) program. Presently, there are 22 generic top-level domains, which include: .com, .edu, .org, .net and etc.

The process of work on the program launched three years ago. The program will extend the Top-Level Domains (TLDs) by allowing companies, organizations and cities to use their own domain names. For example: .hotel, .Tbilisi, .commission, .Rustavi 2, .facebook and so on. To make clear, let’s take for example the official website of the Georgian National Communications Commission. In order to view the official page of the Commission in Internet one has to type:  www.gncc.ge. After the changes come into force, the Georgian National Communications Commission will have an opportunity to have the following Internet address: www.gncc.commission. Private companies, government organizations and even natural persons can apply for a new Internet addresses.

ICANN will start accepting applications for new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) from January12, 2012.
