ComCom Chairman Meets TV Representatives to Talk about Media Challenges

Chairman of the Communications Commission, Goga Gulordava, and ComCom member Ivane Makharadze held a working meeting with representatives of up to 40 television broadcasters. The meeting served as a platform for exchanging views on significant issues, challenges, and current topical matters in the media sector. The Chairman addressed the broadcasters and presented ComCom’s vision regarding the issues under discussion. According to him, the Commission is interested in maintaining close cooperation with broadcasters, gaining a detailed understanding of their needs and challenges, and jointly seeking solutions in order to ensure effective enforcement of the law and protection of the best interests of viewers.

During the meeting, the parties discussed amendments to the Law on Broadcasting that entered into force in April 2025, aimed at ensuring due accuracy of facts, fairness, impartiality, and respect for privacy. The discussion also covered rules on product placement and commercial communications, issues related to broadcaster financing, advertising revenues, and other relevant topics. In addition, representatives of the Commission reviewed the guidelines developed and published by ComCom, which serve as a practical editorial manual on regulatory standards for media representatives and clarify the meaning of accuracy, fairness, impartiality, and the protection of privacy.

“The Commission’s objective is for the media to uphold the fundamental standards of journalism that meet the core principles of accuracy, fairness, and impartiality. Sanctions are a tool, and we will use them when necessary. However, our intention—and one of the main purposes of this meeting—is to prevent violations to the greatest extent possible. The Commission’s message to broadcasters is as follows: comply with the law, act in accordance with journalistic standards, and approach us when you have questions. Viewers deserve media that they can trust and that adheres to the established standards,” stated ComCom Chairman Goga Gulordava, who once again assured broadcasters that, within a consultative framework, the relevant departments of the Commission are ready to respond to the broadcasters’ inquiries and provide recommendations.

The meeting, which allowed the broadcasters to raise questions of interest and express their views, was initiated by ComCom, as the Commission aims to cooperate with broadcasters in a dialogue-based format. Meetings of this format will have a positive impact on the effective enforcement of the law, ultimately serving the best interests of viewers.
