ComCom Fines POSTV GEL 2,500 for Violating Principles of Impartiality
The Communications Commission has fined POSTV GEL 2,500 for violating the Law of Georgia on Broadcasting. Specifically, as a result of ComCom’s monitoring, which covered the period from 22 June through 23 June of this year, it was established that the news programmes aired on the channel contained instances of the broadcaster expressing personal opinions and failing to present facts with due accuracy, in violation of the requirements established by law.
The Law of Georgia on Broadcasting prohibits broadcasters from covering news and certain political programmes based on personal attitudes or opinions. Restrictions on the expression of a broadcaster’s personal attitude or opinion in news programmes, as well as the requirement to present facts with due accuracy, serve to protect editorial independence and viewers’ rights, ensuring that audiences can receive objective and comprehensive information.
As a written warning had already been issued to POSTV as a sanction for a similar violation during the previous year, the Communications Commission imposed a GEL 2,500 fine on the broadcaster.
