ComCom Representatives Participate in the Georgian Internet Industry Forum
Member of the Communications Commission Ekaterine Imedadze and ComCom representatives took part in the 2026 Georgian Internet Industry Forum, which was organised by the Association of Small and Medium Telecom Operators. As part of the event, the ComCom team took part in several thematic sessions and briefed representatives of small and medium telecom companies on ongoing developments and future plans in the field of electronic communications, issues related to telecommunications market research and regulation, as well as the development of IP peering and Internet Exchange Points (IXPs).
During the forum’s main session, Ekaterine Imedadze spoke about current developments and future plans in the field of electronic communications.
The forum’s program also covered the progress of the state internetization project, market and technological development issues, and challenges facing the sector.
ComCom representatives provided participants with detailed information on the trends in the telecommunications sector and the ongoing projects aimed at promoting competition in the telecom market. The discussions included holistic studies covering the wholesale markets for access to physical communications infrastructure; high-quality services provided through dedicated channels to business subscribers; IP transit, i.e. global and local internet connectivity; and dedicated backhaul channels connecting core networks and settlements.
In addition, ComCom representatives, together with representatives of EURO-IX and IXP.GE, discussed the current state of IXP development with telecom operators, future objectives, and the next steps for developing the internet exchange infrastructure. Participants were also presented with the results of a study commissioned by ComCom and conducted by the international consulting company Plum Consulting. The study assesses the factors hindering the development of IP peering and IXPs, and provides relevant recommendations to support the development of the market and infrastructure.
The development of Internet Exchange Points increases the ability of different networks to exchange local traffic directly, contributing to improved Internet connectivity quality and reduced latency. Exchanging traffic locally, in turn, reduces dependence on international transit and operational costs, while also supporting the development of the local digital ecosystem and a competitive environment.
The 2026 Georgian Internet Industry Forum serves as a professional discussion and experience-sharing platform for representatives of the telecommunications sector, bringing together representatives of the sector’s regulatory authority, government agencies, telecom companies, the technology sector and international professional organisations to discuss current industry issues.
