1,115,000 Fixed Internet Users in 2023

According to the 2023 Activity Report of the Communications Commission, there were 1,115,000 fixed broadband internet users last year, which is 39,100 more than in 2022. The number of natural person customers increased by 3.6%, while the number of legal entity customers increased by 4%.

The report also states that over the last 5 years, the average annual growth of the number of subscribers was 4.3% for natural persons and 4.6% for legal entities.

It is worth noting that the number of natural person customers exceeded the 1 million mark in 2023. It increased by 37,100 over the previous year to a total of 1,061,000. The density of fixed broadband customers in households also increased by 3.4% to 95.7%.

Looking at the results by company, in 2023 Magticom still had the largest share of natural person customers (508,000, which was 11,700 more than in the previous year). Silknet recorded the largest increase in the number of customers in 2023 (14,300) to a total of 322,000. Akhali Kselebi had 64,000 customers (4,000 more than in 2022). The number of Skytel users increased by 3000 to 58,000.

Regarding the distribution of legal entity fixed broadband users by company, Silknet had the largest number of customers (23,000, which was 2000 more than in the previous year, followed by Magticom (16,000, which was 1000 more than in the previous year). As for Skytel and Akhali Kselebi, their customer figures remained unchanged at 6000 and 3000 respectively.

Over the last 5 years, the number of natural person and legal entity users of fibre-optic technologies increased by an average of 6.6%, and continues to grow. Last year, the number of people using these technologies increased by 46,000 to 996,000. It is worth noting that only the number of fibre-optic internet users increased in 2023. This is due to the development and improved accessibility of the fibre-optic service network.

Fixed wireless internet technology accounts for the second-largest number of customers. In 2023, the number of users fell by 2000 to 100,000. The use of LTE and xDSL technologies also declined by 2000 and 3000 customers respectively. Based on the latest figures, 4000 customers are using LTE technology, and 15,000 are using xDSL technology. This is due to the fact that fibre-optic technology offers faster internet, higher capacity and lower latency, so authorised entities are increasingly trying to replace outdated and limited technical capabilities with fibre-optic technology.

Since 2023, Georgians have also been able to access the Starlink satellite broadband internet. This technology is particularly beneficial for the mountainous regions and other areas of Georgia that are unable to access broadband services. As of today, Starink has 24 legal entity customers and 467 natural person customers in Georgia.
