ComCom and Ministry of Education Hold the Media Literacy Day in all Schools on 25 October

As part of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week, all schools across Georgia marked the Media Literacy Day on 25 October. Pupils and teachers at public and private schools across Tbilisi and other regions took part in various activities that were designed to raise awareness about media literacy. The Global Media Literacy Week has been organised by the Communications Commission for the second time.

Various activities involving pupils were held in schools to raise awareness about the importance of media literacy. In some of the schools, teachers held a lesson in media literacy, where students were informed about the negative effects of disinformation.

In some schools, students used the educational materials provided in advance by the Communications Commission to produce and display informational banners with useful and necessary advice on detecting fake information. Some schools marked the Media Literacy Day in the form of a flash mob and painted the school yards with media literacy-themed pictures. They also screened films that develop critical thinking skills for teenagers.

High school students participated in conferences with teachers, where they discussed the meaning of fake news and the harm that it can cause. There was also an essay competition among the pupils on topics such as the ways of finding information in the 21st century, and the harmful effects of fake information. Furthermore, schools were able to use the questionnaire provided by the Communications Commission to hold a contest among high school students to identify the most media literate pupil.

The Media Literacy Week, which aims to raise public awareness about the importance of media literacy, is held annually following the 2021 UN resolution. The Communications Commission is holding the event between 24 and 28 October this year.

As part of the Media Literacy Week, the Commission will hold an informational meeting with parents to discuss the issue of safe use of the internet by young people. Furthermore, as part of the Media Literacy Week, the Media Lab will hold discussions with experts on the subject of cyber security. The Global Media and Information Literacy Week will conclude with a summary conference.
