ComCom and Sokhumi State University to Cooperate on Media Literacy

The Communications Commission has signed a cooperation agreement with Sokhumi State University to help integrate media literacy into formal education and raise awareness among students. The agreement was signed by ComCom member Natia Kukuladze and Sokhumi State University Rector Zurab Khonelidze.

On the day of the signing of the agreement, ComCom organised a public lecture for around 100 students on the subject of “Media Literacy Development in Georgia.” Through practical exercises, students learned about the methods for detecting fake news, distinguishing truth from fiction and establishing real facts. They were also given examples of disinformation, misinformation and malinformation. Other important topics of discussion included the significance of media literacy, the challenges faced by Georgia and the rest of the world in this regard, as well as the role of the Communications Commission in the process of media literacy development in Georgia, and the projects implemented thus far.

Media literacy has already been implemented at Sokhumi State University, where it is being taught as an optional subject. Under the cooperation agreement, the parties will actively work on facilitating further systemic integration of media literacy into formal education by organising various events for students and lectors. Furthermore, the Commission will hold additional themed seminars and conferences with the involvement of local and international experts.

ComCom has already held informational meetings on the subject of media literacy at two universities, and will organise further meetings at other universities across Georgia.
