ComCom Chairman Meets the ITU Head of the Office for Europe
Chairman of the Communications Commission Goga Gulordava, and ComCom member Ekaterine Imedadze held a meeting with the Director of the Office for Europe of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Jaroslaw Ponder, and the Head of the ITU Regulatory and Market Environment Division, Ahmed Elraghy. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between the parties and discuss future joint projects. During the discussion, Goga Gulordava highlighted the importance of sharing best practices and regulatory approaches between ComCom and the ITU.
“It is crucial for the development of Georgia’s telecom sector that our cooperation continues to deepen, especially on key issues such as the development of the digital broadband map; bridging the digital divide and enhancing digital skills; as well as developing regulatory frameworks for new technologies and ensuring efficient spectrum management,” Mr. Gulordava stated.
Jaroslaw Ponder is the Director of the Office for Europe of the International Telecommunication Union. Over the years, he has held various positions within ITU, including roles in the General Secretariat, the Telecommunication Development Bureau, and regional offices. His work has focussed on advancing the information society and promoting digital transformation at national, regional, international, and UN levels. He has been associated with the development of major initiatives such as the annual WSIS Forum, as well as other projects. In his current role, Mr. Ponder has established several coordination mechanisms that support cooperation with UN agencies at national and regional levels to advance digital transformation.
On 11 February, the Communications Commission will host a meeting of ITU’s Digital Regulation Network Governing Board in Tbilisi. The event aims to strengthen strategic tools in connectivity planning, regulatory reform, and investment analysis, as well as to promote the sharing of international best practices.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a specialised agency of the United Nations in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT). Its core mission is to promote international cooperation and connectivity in communication networks. The organization was founded in 1865 and became a specialised UN agency in 1947. Its membership currently includes 193 countries and around 900 companies, universities, and international and regional organisations.
Initially, ITU’s work focussed solely on telegraphy. Today it covers the entire ICT sector, including telecommunications infrastructure, spectrum management, digital development, and emerging technologies.
Georgia joined the ITU in 1992, represented by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development. Under its mandate as the national regulatory authority, the Communications Commission has actively cooperated with the ITU since its establishment.
