ComCom Fines Spero TV GEL 2,500 for Inefficiency of its Self-Regulatory Mechanism

The Communications Commission has fined Spero TV GEL 2,500 for violating the Law of Georgia on Broadcasting. Specifically, the Commission received a complaint from citizen K.K. in August of this year, alleging that the broadcaster had spread false information about him in one of its stories and on social media. Based on the decision of the Commission, K.K. appealed to the self-regulatory body of Spero TV, and received a letter a month and a half later stating that the complaint was not satisfied, with no reasons being given. In addition, the involvement of K.K. in the proceedings was not ensured.
In relation to the same issue, the Communications Commission instructed Spero TV to create a website and issued the broadcaster with a written warning on 3 April.
Based on the assessment of the Communications Commission, Spero TV does not have an effective self-regulation mechanism and does not have an appeal body. In addition, Spero TV has not implemented the Commission's instructions from 3 April to create a website and provide the appropriate information on it.
Thus, the Communications Commission fined Spero TV GEL 2,500 for the lack of an effective self-regulation mechanism and failure to comply with ComCom's decision.
