ComCom Holds a Conference on Artificial Intelligence as Part of the Media Literacy Week

As part of of UNESCO's Global Media and Information Literacy Week, the Communications Commission held a conference titled “The Advantage of Mind over Artificial Intelligence – Media and Information Literacy in the Digital World,” which aimed to discuss the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence and the importance of media literacy in this process. Member of the Communications Commission Natia Kukuladze and Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Zviad Gabisonia, took part in the event. 

The conference was opened by ComCom representative Otar Chelidze with a presentation on the subject of “Media Literacy in the Age of AI,” where he reviewed important issues such as the trends in the use of AI in Georgia and abroad, the importance of media literacy in the modern era, AI hallucination, deepfake, AI agents, etc. 

The event featured a panel discussion on the topic of “Artificial Intelligence – Opportunities and Threats,” moderated by ComCom member Natia Kukuladze. The discussion featured Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth and expert in digital education and artificial intelligence, Zviad Gabisonia; AI and data technology professional and BTU assistant professor, Irakli Gogatishvili; co-founder and director of the Georgian Artificial Intelligence Association (GAIA), Gigi Gorgadze; and co-founder and director of the Georgian branch of IT Academy Step, Maka Makhatadze. During the session, participants discussed the importance of artificial intelligence in education, local and international practices, and AI regulation issues. 

The next panel discussion held at the conference was “Mind vs. Artificial Intelligence,” moderated by the head of ComCom Media Lab, Rusudan Chachanidze. The session was attended by co-founder of Widgera, Sandro Bolkvadze; co-founder of Velini, Giorgi Khanishvili; biophysicist, AI specialist and researcher at the Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire, Lasha Dalakishvili; and head of the Psychology Programme at Alterbridge University, Ani Gvetadze. The discussion focussed on the different capabilities of AI and the human mind, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each. 

Also participating in the event was Kai, an AI character created by ComCom, who gave a speech to the audience and wished them an interesting and productive meeting. 

The UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Week has been held annually on the basis of the 2021 UN resolution, serving to raise public awareness about media literacy and its importance. One of the main priorities for the Communications Commission, as the body responsible for media literacy development in the country, is to ensure that as many citizens as possible become involved in this process.
