ComCom Holds a Media Literacy Conference for Teachers in Kutaisi

The Communications Commission, with the support of UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, held a conference in Kutaisi on the subject of “Integrating Media Literacy into Formal Education – the Role of Teachers and Practical Approaches.” The event served to strengthen the process of integrating media literacy into formal education, share teaching experiences, and discuss progress and challenges. The Commission organised the conference in two stages to ensure that it was accessible for schools in different regions across the country. The first meeting in Tbilisi was attended by representatives from schools in Eastern Georgia, while the second meeting in Kutaisi hosted school principals, teachers and students from schools in Western Georgia.

The conference was opened by ComCom member Natia Kukuladze and UNICEF representative in Georgia Jesper Moller, who emphasised the importance of integrating media literacy into formal education and highlighted media literacy as a vital component for navigating the modern world.

Following the opening speeches, Head of Media Literacy Department at the Communications Commission, Mariam Dakhundaridze, presented the media literacy projects implemented by the Commission in Georgia. She highlighted the project to integrate media literacy into formal education, which the Communications Commission launched together with UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia in 2022. As part of the project, the Commission devised a media literacy educational standard, a teaching module and a textbook, which has been used to train teachers across Georgia. As a result, 6 schools started teaching media literacy as a separate elective subject in 2023. This number increased to 227 in 2024, with 90% being regional schools.

The second part of the event involved a panel discussion on “The Role of Teachers and Practical Approaches in Teaching Media Literacy – Sharing Experiences,” moderated by Manana Jincharadze, media literacy trainer and representative of the National Center for Teacher Professional Development. Participants in the discussion included deputy principal of Zugdidi Public School N5 Maia Ghughunashvili, principal of Kutaisi Public School N24 Rusudan Karkadze, Batumi Public School N16 teacher Inga Gegeshidze, and public school teacher from Bakhvi (Municipality of Ozurgeti), Khatuna Baramidze. The panel discussed the media literacy teaching methods and conducted video presentations on interactive and cognitive teaching, which showed the activities through which students learn to filter media messages, safely navigate the digital space, detect disinformation and determine the truth, as well as avoid cyber threats and become responsible citizens.

The Communications Commission, as the body responsible for media literacy development in the country, prioritises systemic integration of media literacy into formal education.
