ComCom Holds a Meeting with School Principals on Integrating Media Literacy into Formal Education
The Communications Commission, together with UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, held an informational meeting with school principals in Rustavi on the topic of integrating media literacy into formal education and raising awareness about the subject among the school leadership. The meeting took place at the Rustavi Resource Centre, and was attended by 30 school principals.
Participants were addressed by the Head of ComCom Media Literacy Department Mariam Dakhundaridze, Deputy Head of General Education Department at the Ministry of Education Mariam Chikobava, and UNICEF representative Maia Kurtsikidze. The speakers emphasised the importance of developing media literacy skills among young people. After the opening speeches, ComCom Media Literacy Department representative Mariam Bibilashvili presented the textbook created for the project.
Last year, the Communications Commission held 7 meetings with school principals in Adjara, Guria, Samegrelo, Imereti and Kakheti, during which it provided detailed information to 240 principals about the introduction and selection of the subject.
The project to integrate media literacy into formal education was launched by the Communications Commission in 2022. The Commission carried out research on media literacy needs, devised an educational standard, teaching module and textbook, which were used to train 1600 teachers across Georgia in teaching media literacy. As of today, media literacy as an optional subject has already been implemented in 6 schools in Georgia for X, XI, and XII grade pupils, and will be introduced in other schools in the future.
