ComCom Hosts EaPeReg Expert Group

The Communications Commission hosted the 17th meeting of the Spectrum Experts Working Group of the Eastern Partnership Electronic Communications Regulators Network (EaPeReg SEWG) in Tbilisi. The meeting was attended by representatives of regulatory bodies of EU member countries, International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) and other EU institutions. The purpose of the event was to identify the current challenges and opportunities related to the use of the radio frequency spectrum in the field of electronic communications, and discuss ways to solve them.

The issues discussed during the meeting included the development and effective operation of the 5G network, as well as security and harmonisation with EU standards. The conversation also touched on important topics such as the extension of the Regional Spectrum Agreement (RSA), the use of additional frequency bands for 5G services, and their effect on network bandwidth, coverage and use of new technologies. With regards to security, topics of discussion included 5G technology encryption, authentication, network security, and ensuring the resilience of 5G networks against new cyber threats. Participants also reviewed aspects of the use and regulation of 5G technology in corporate networks.

SEWG was the first expert group established in 2015 at the initiative of the Communications Commission, which chaired EaPeReg at that time. Since 2018, the group has been co-chaired by the ComCom Spectrum and Technology Department representative Roman Kurdadze together with representatives of the Latvian and Lithuanian regulatory bodies.
