ComCom Makes the Programming Textbook “Hello Ruby” Available to All Schools

The Communications Commission, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, has made the primary school computer science textbook “Hello Ruby” available to all schools.  As part of this initiative, “Hello Ruby” author Linda Liukas trained 20 teachers in the teaching methods and approaches that employ her books. In addition, trainers held up to 50 webinars for over 800 computer technology teachers across Georgia, including ethnic minorities. The teachers will later receive the “Hello Ruby” textbook and supporting resources, which they will be able to integrate into the academic process from the start of the 2024 school year.

As part of the initiative, ComCom also developed a “Hello Ruby” teaching methodology module that includes detailed information on each chapter, the teaching principles, the possibilities for effective use of the books, and the activities implemented by teachers on the basis of “Hello Ruby” exercises. It is worth noting that the Commission will continue to support teachers in the process of implementing the books into the academic process.

“Hello Ruby” author Linda Liukas, who has been recognised as a digital ambassador by the European Union, visited Georgia in 2019 and 2023 at the invitation of the Communications Commission. During her visit, she trained computer technology teachers and trainers in the modern methods of teaching programming through the “Hello Ruby” textbook.

“Hello Ruby” is a series of books about the basics of programming and computer science, which has been translated and adopted in 36 countries. The books have already been integrated into the New York school curriculum. In 2019, the Communications Commission obtained the license to publish the books in Georgian language and went on to publish 17,500 textbooks since then. As of today, over 10,000 pupils in 100 schools across Georgia are using this resource to learn the basics of computer science.
