Within the framework of the Hungarian presidency of the EU Council, on the initiative of the presiding country and by special invitation, the event was attended not only by representatives of the European Commission and EU member states, but also by representatives of candidate countries for EU membership. The event served to review the status of the roaming agreement between the European Commission and the participating countries, assess the potential legal solutions surrounding this issue, and facilitate discussion on the advantages and challenges of integration into the EU’s single roaming space.

During the event, Ekaterine Imadedze gave a presentation to the participants, where she reviewed in detail the steps taken by Georgia with regards to integration into the single roaming space of the European Union, and the projects implemented with the involvement of the Communications Commission – specifically, the results of the analysis of the legislative changes and regulatory norms required for joining the single space, as well as the economic impact.

In addition, the meeting included a discussion about the effectiveness of the proposed legal solution that involves approximation of the legal framework of candidate countries to the EU legislation and which, if successfully implemented, will ensure the country's full integration into the single roaming space of the European Union.

As an EU membership candidate, Georgia has the opportunity to gradually join the roaming space of the European Union, which means that Georgian citizens will be able to benefit from the same tariffs as citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area. On the one hand, this will be another step towards integration into the European Union, while on the other hand, it will bring significant economic benefit to citizens and the business sector alike.

Services of the EU’s single roaming space are known as “Roam Like at Home” (RLAH). They allow customers from EU countries to use mobile services across the EU without paying additional roaming fees, or at significantly reduced tariffs.

Creating the opportunity for Georgian consumers to access telecom services at affordable rates is one of ComCom’s main priorities.
