ComCom Member Introduces the Projects and Goals of the Commission to the EC Deputy Director for Communications Networks

ComCom member Ekaterine Imedadze held a meeting with Deputy Director-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), Kamila Kloc. The aim of the meeting was to introduce Ms Kloc to the activities implemented by the Commission in order to harmonise the regulatory environment of the Georgian telecom sector with the European Union, as well as present the plans for the future. 

During the meeting, the conversation touched on the comprehensive study of the Georgian telecom market, which aims to enhance competition and remove barriers to market entry. With regards to this issue, Ekaterine Imadedze thanked Kamila Kloc for the EU’s involvement and support for the project. 

The parties discussed the ongoing process to connect Georgia to the single EU roaming space. Furthermore, Ms Imedadze talked about ComCom’s membership in the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC). In this regard, Kamila Kloc assured her colleague of the EC’s positive response and support. 

Ekaterine Imedadze drew attention to the issue of international connectivity and noted that with the Black Sea Submarine Cable Project, Georgia has the ambition to become a regional digital hub. Topics related to the participation of a third country in the EU framework programme “Connecting Europe Facility” were also highlighted during the conversation. 

At the end of the meeting, the parties discussed future cooperation and agreed on potential areas for it. 

The Communications Commission prioritises cooperation with European bodies representing the telecom sector, the sharing of best practices, engagement, and obtaining constructive feedback for the purpose of approximation with the EU regulatory framework.
