ComCom Member Opens the International Conference “Telecommunications and Security”
The Caucasus University, with the support of the Communications Commission, hosted the fifth international scientific conference “Telecommunications and Security,” which served to discuss the latest trends in the field of telecommunications and cybersecurity, and to share experience. The conference, which addressed the modern challenges in cybersecurity, the prospects for development of telecommunications, and the innovations in the field of IT, was opened by ComCom member Ekaterine Imedadze. She talked about the main goals of the Communications Commission, as well as the digital sustainability of Georgia and the prospects for the development of innovations. The commissioner noted that in modern reality, the security of the telecom sector goes beyond the technical issues, and is of strategic importance. According to her, the Communications Commission is actively working to ensure that the regulatory environment creates a predictable and flexible framework for new technologies.
Specifically, the future initiatives of Communications Commission in this field include: promoting infrastructure sharing through a GIS platform; promoting the development of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), creating a framework for the development of private 5G networks for industrial and public use; and supporting the integration of D2D (Direct to Device) satellite services, which is based on data-driven decisions and market analysis.
Ekaterine Imedadze also noted that a significant part of the Communications Commission's activities is related to strengthening digital inclusion, promoting media and digital literacy, and protecting consumer interests: “Balanced regulation leads not only to technological progress, but also the protection of consumers and a society that is ready for digital challenges,” she said.
At the end of her speech, Ekaterine Imedadze also highlighted Georgia's strategic vision: “Georgia's experience clearly shows that security, innovation, and a competitive environment must be developed simultaneously. Our goal is to create a strong, sustainable, and inclusive digital ecosystem that ensures the country's regional leadership and the security of each consumer,” the commissioner noted and emphasised that the Commission's task is to ensure competitiveness and security in the telecommunications market.
The international scientific conference Telecommunications and Security” has been organised by the Scientific Cyber Security Association (SCSA) and Internet Development Initiative (IDI) for the fifth time, while the Caucasus University Cyber Security Centre and RIPE NCC, together with the Communications Commission, have supported the even for two years. The conference was attended by cybersecurity experts, as well as representatives from the academia, the state sector, and the industry.
