ComCom: More than 180 Students from 26 Universities Take Part in the Contest “Become a Media Literacy Researcher”

The Communications Commission awarded the winners of the analytical paper competition “Become a Media Literacy Researcher.” The competition was held for the first time this year and involved more than 180 students from 26 different universities. According to the rules, participants had to choose their paper topics from the following research areas: media and artificial intelligence—challenges and opportunities; fake news (disinformation, misinformation); hate speech and online discrimination—the role of media literacy.

First place was awarded to Mariam Latsabidze, a student of Tbilisi State University, who presented a paper titled “The Evolution of Algorithmic Models and Their Psychological Impact on the Spread of Disinformation.” The Communications Commission awarded her GEL 5,000 GEL.

Second place went to Nino Bregadze, a student of Ilia State University. Her paper addressed the topic “White Lies in the Rabbit’s Labyrinth: The Discourse of Disinformation Against the Background of Scrolling Culture.” ComCom awarded her GEL 3,000 GEL.

Third place was won by Khatia Leonidze, a student of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, with her paper titled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Media: Opportunities, Challenges, and a Dual Nature.” ComCom awarded Khatia 1,500 GEL.

In addition, the winning papers will be published on the international platform Media and Learning Association (MLA). The authors of the top 10 papers were awarded a collection of the latest professional literature by ComCom, and all competition participants received certificates.

While working on their academic papers, participants were required to adhere to academic standards and structure. The papers had to present well-argued and logical reasoning, as well as new or alternative perspectives on the research topic.

Raising awareness about media literacy and involving a broader range of stakeholders in this process is a priority for the Communications Commission.
