ComCom Presents the Results of the “Integrating Media Literacy into Formal Education” Project to the Ministry of Education and Science

Presentation of the results of the joint project of the Communications Commission, UNICEF and the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia to integrate media literacy into formal education took place at a special event. Welcoming speeches were made by the Minister of Education Giorgi Amilakhvari, ComCom member Natia Kukuladze and UNICEF Georgia representative Ghassan Khalil, who talked about the importance of integrating media literacy into formal education.

During the meeting, Head of the Media Literacy Department of the Communications Commission Mariam Dakhundaridze, Deputy Head of the General Education Department of the Ministry of Education Mariam Chikobava, and media literacy expert Natalia Ingorokva made a detailed presentation about the project. Afterwards, the trained teacher presented the project developed during the seminars. The beneficiaries received certificates at the end of the meeting.

The project to integrate media literacy into formal education began in 2022. An educational standard, textbook and training module for teachers were created for this project, which was funded by UNICEF and aimed to train 500 teachers. However, due to high demand, up to 600 teachers were ultimately trained in Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Zestaponi, Ambrolauri, |Gori, Mtskheta, Telavi, Ozurgeti, Chokhatauri, Marneuli, Akhaltsikhe and Pankisi.

Beneficiaries of the media literacy training will be teaching optional media literacy classes to 10th graders. Students will learn about media literacy, media and information language, information processing and disinformation.
