ComCom Representatives Hold Meetings with Finnish Colleagues on Media Literacy Issues

ComCom member Natia Kukuladze, Head of Media Literacy Department Mariam Dakhundaridze and Head of International Relations Office Nino Grdzelishvili held working meetings with their Finnish colleagues in order to share best practices in the field of media literacy and strengthen mutual cooperation in this area.

The meetings were attended by representatives of the agencies and organisations responsible for the formation and implementation of media literacy policy, including a representative of the Finnish National Audiovisual Institute (KAVI), the programme director of the Finnish Safer Internet Centre, the executive director of the Finnish Media Education Society, and representatives of the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI).

During the visit, representatives of the Communications Commission introduced their Finnish colleagues to the latest developments in the field of media and digital literacy in Georgia, as well as ComCom's approaches, projects and achievements in the development of media literacy. On their part, ComCom representatives received comprehensive information about the development of media literacy policy in Finland, integration of media literacy into formal education, and various educational projects.

Notably, Finland has 50 years of experience in media education, and media literacy has been integrated into formal education the since 2000. Through the joint efforts of ComCom, UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, media literacy in Georgia was integrated into formal education three years ago and is currently being taught in 227 schools. In order to involve more schools and stakeholders in this process, one of the priorities for the Communications Commission, as the agency responsible for the development of media literacy, is to share experience with peer organisations.
