ComCom Representatives Take Part in High-Level Event WSIS+20

Member of the Communications Commission Ekaterine Imedadze and Head of the International Relations Service Nino Grdzelishvili took part in the high-level event WSIS+20 and AI for Good Summit in Geneva organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The event included a roundtable meeting of regulators, where Georgia was represented by Ekaterine Imedadze. The main topics of discussion were the development of 5G technology, AI regulation, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion. Ms. Imedadze introduced the projects carried out by the Communications Commission for the purpose of implementing 5G in Georgia and facilitating competition on the market.

Together with the heads of the Greek and Portuguese regulators, Ekaterine Imedadze also took part in the LeadersTalk panel, where she discussed the need for telecom regulators to implement transparent and competitive policies to promote sustainable digital development.

In addition, Ms. Imedadze acted as a speaker at a joint session of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and ITU, which focussed on digital skills and labour market transformation.

Within the framework of WSIS+20, during a special session of the Digital Regulation Network (DRN) held at the initiative of the ITU Development Bureau (BDT), Ekaterine Imedadze also spoke on behalf of Eastern Partnership Regulators Network (EaPeReg). The main topic of the discussion was the establishment of cooperation frameworks by regulators for sustainable digital development and the use of artificial intelligence and innovative technologies to overcome challenges in the digital space.

During the event, Ekaterine Imedadze also took part in a session for female ministers and leaders in the ICT sector, where they discussed reducing gender inequality and women's involvement in digital governance.

Later, Ms. Imedadze delivered a speech at the GovStack Digital Leaders Forum organised by Germany, Estonia and ITU. The main topics of the session were the development of inclusive digital public infrastructure and strengthening women's leadership in the digital transformation process.

Within the framework of WSIS+20, Ekaterine Imedadze and Nino Grdzelishvili also held meetings with the Head of the ITU Development Bureau, as well as the heads of regulatory authorities of Greece, Portugal, Poland, Cyprus, Moldova, UAE, Bahrain and Jordan, which served to deepen cooperation between ComCom and fellow regulatory authorities, and discuss future joint initiatives.

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a platform that brings together different stakeholders, including the representatives of governments, civil society, the private sector, academia, international organisations, and industry leaders. The event serves to discuss the achievements, key trends, challenges and opportunities for the ITU member states under the 2003 Geneva Action Plan and the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
