ComCom Representatives Take Part in Mobile World Congress

The Global System Mobile Association (GSMA) held the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, which served to introduce the mobile market trends, innovations and best practices. ComCom member Ekaterine Imedadze, Head of IR Service Nino Grdzelishvili, Head of Competition and Market Regulation Department Ekaterine Sichinava, and Spectrum and Technology Department representative Giorgi Papava took part in the event. 

The Mobile World Congress had over 100,000 participants from across the globe. It was devoted to important topics such as 5G and 6G technologies, artificial intelligence, mobile virtual network operators, cybersecurity, digital governance and industry, digital transformation and digital inclusion. 

Within the framework of the congress, ComCom representatives held bilateral meetings with U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) members, heads of the regulatory bodies of Portugal (ANACOM), Czech Republic (CTU), Lithuania (RRT) and Brazil (ANATEL), and the CEOs of the regulatory bodies of Bahrain (TRA), Singapore (IMDA), United Arab Emirates (TDRA) and Saudi Arabia (SCT). During the meetings, ComCom representatives introduced the main priorities of the Commission's activities to their colleagues and discussed joint initiatives and opportunities for broadening cooperation. 

ComCom member Ekaterine Imedadze also held a working meeting with the 2024 chair of BEREC, the president of the Croatian telecom regulator HAKOM, as well as the 2023 and 2025 BEREC chairs and the office director of BEREC. The main topic of the meeting was ComCom's membership in BEREC. It was noted that BEREC approved the procedure for evaluating the applications of countries wishing to join, and the Communications Commission will be one of the first whose application will be considered in accordance with the new procedure. ComCom representatives reiterated their desire to join BEREC and informed their partners about the steps taken in this regard. To promote the development of strategic projects, the Communications Commission also held bilateral meetings with representatives of ICANN and DG CNET. 

As part of the trip, ComCom representatives also visited the headquarters of the Spanish regulator CNMC, where they met CNMC board members, Director of Telecommunications and heads of the market regulation, market analysis and technical units. ComCom representatives shared with their Spanish colleagues the information about priority projects such as the comprehensive study of the telecom market, updated methodology of market analysis, integration into the EU single roaming space, and others. On their part, CNMC representatives presented the Spanish practice of implementing the Broadband Cost Reduction Directive (BCRD), which is one of the most successful experiences in the European Union. The bilateral meeting also touched upon the experiences and successful approaches in dealing with the challenges in the market opening process.

 

The Communications Commission prioritises cooperation with fellow regulators and other organisations in the sector for the purpose of sharing experience.
