ComCom Sanctions “Alt-Info” for Airing Political Advertising Outside the Election Period
The Communications Commission has issued TV Alt-Info with a written caution for airing political advertising in violation of the law. The Commission carried out media monitoring and found that in July of this year, the broadcaster aired a video clip that falls in the category of political advertising.
In the video clip in question, an Alt-Info representative states that despite the unlawful moves by Georgian Dream to ban their political parties, they will be taking part in the elections by joining forces with other conservative groups to form an alliance and fight for political power on a united list. Furthermore, the representative made the following appeal: “Support us if you want there to be an alternative to Georgian Dream and UNM.” The Commission found that the clip was designed to hinder the campaigns of Georgian Dream and the United National Movement in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The communications Commission assessed the aforementioned video clip as political advertising, which the broadcasters are prohibited from airing outside of the period and procedure stipulated by the Election Code. Therefore, the Commission took the decision to sanction Alt-Info for violating the Georgian laws on political/pre-election advertising.
Due to the fact that Alt-Info had not been sanctioned for a similar violation during the past year, the Commission issued the broadcaster with a written caution.
