ComCom Sanctions “Mtavari Arkhi” for Airing Political Adverts Outside the Election Period
The Communications Commission has issued Mtavari Arkhi with a written caution for airing political advertising in violation of the law. In July of this year, the station aired video clips showing members of parliament who supported the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence and depicting them in a negative context. The Commission found that the video clips served to hinder the election of political unions and their representatives who will potentially be participating in the parliamentary elections scheduled for 26 October 2024.
The video clips containing political adverts were aired in violation of the rules and norms of posting political/pre-election advertising outlined in the Georgian legislation. Specifically, it is prohibited to place political adverts outside of the period and procedure stipulated by the Election Code
Due to the fact that Mtavari Arkhi had not committed a similar violation during the past year, the Commission issued the broadcaster with a written caution and instructed it to immediately take the video clips off air.
