ComCom Supports the EDMO Guidelines for Effective Media Literacy Initiatives

The Communications Commission, as the body responsible for media literacy development in Georgia, supports the Guidelines for Effective Media Literacy Initiatives developed by the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). The guidelines serve to increase the effectiveness of media literacy initiatives, which in turn includes relevant recommendations and international examples.

The guidelines consist of different stages for developing, implementing and evaluating media literacy initiatives, which in turn include 12 principles: defining clear goals; focussing on strengthening the target audience; ensuring inclusiveness, transparency and sustainability; using results-based approaches; complying with ethical principles; complying with the needs; facilitating the understanding of the digital media ecosystem; proper preparation of the initiatives; identifying potential improvement opportunities, and evaluating results.

The guidelines were developed by EDMO’s Working Group on Media Literacy Standards and Best Practices, including international experts such as Martina Chapman, Maja Cappello, Sonia Livingstone, Vitor Tome and others.

The European Digital Media Observatory published the Guidelines for Effective Media Literacy Initiatives on 21 October. The guidelines were supported by around 70 organisations from 28 countries, including the British communications regulator Ofcom and the Council of Media Services of Slovakia (CMS).

The Communications Commission prioritises cooperation and sharing of information and experience with fellow regulators and other industry representatives.
