Communications Commission and UNICEF Hold Discussion with School Pupils during the Media Literacy Week

The Communications Commission and UNICEF have held discussions on the subject of media literacy at Public School #123 in Tbilisi. Commissioner Natia Kukuladze, Head of the Media Literacy Department Maka Dakhundaridze and the representative of UNICEF in Georgia, Ghassan Khalil met with high school pupils and discussed important issues such as disinformation, fake news, and media literacy as a key tool for dealing with these challenges. 

“Every child has the right to access information, but nowadays it is important to ensure that pupils are protected from the possible harmful effects of that information. Together with the Communications Commission, we had an excellent discussion with the children. We talked to them about the importance of obtaining information from trustworthy sources and the harm that can be caused by disinformation,” stated the representative of UNICEF in Georgia Ghassan Khalil stated. 

The Communications Commission, which determines media literacy policy in Georgia, is organising the media literacy week on 25-29 October. Georgia was one of the co-sponsors of the UN resolution on the global media literacy week, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 25 March 2021. According to the resolution, the global media literacy week will be held annually during the last week of October.
