Communications Commission Announces Radio Broadcasting License Competitions

The Communications Commission has announced competitions for specialised radio broadcasting licenses in Tbilisi, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Racha, Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, Zemo Svaneti and Guria. Applicants will have until 17:00 on 4 July 2022 to present their new broadcasting concept, which will generally follow one theme and not include news or political programmes. The competition is not open to the radio broadcasters who wish to expand their broadcasting area.

The Commission has announced the radio broadcasting license competitions based on the priorities identified during the public survey. According to the survey results, most listeners afforded preference to specialised radio.

Prior to approving the radio broadcasting priorities, the Commission identified 15 broadcasting service zones and proceeded to approve the competition announcement strategy and frequency plan. Competitions for private general or specialised local radio broadcasting licenses will be announced separately to cover specific areas of broadcasting services.

In publishing the free frequency resource, the Commission considered the applications of those wishing to start radio broadcasting activities and their requested broadcasting zones. The Commission also focussed on zones with a shortage or complete lack of radio stations. To achieve maximum radio coverage in populated areas and enable people to listen to the radio, the Communications Commission has announced competitions in 6 different zones.

The preparatory session for broadcasting license applications will be held by the Communications Commission on 7 July at 13:00, while the oral hearing will be held on 11 August at 13:00. The competition will be held on 18 August at 13:00.
