Communications Commission Concludes the Media Literacy Week with a Conference

The Media Literacy Week, organized by the Communications Commission together with various stakeholders, was concluded with a conference. The event was opened by Commissioner - Natia Kukuladze, Minister of Foreign Affairs - Davit Zalkaliani, Deputy Minister of Education and Science - Eka Dgebuadze, representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, as well as representatives from the EU and UN in Georgia. The speakers addressed the importance of developing media literacy in the country and the existing challenges in this field. 

Commissioner Natia Kukuladze highlighted the media literacy projects implemented by the Commission and spoke about the future plans, the significance of media literacy and the role of coordination between the stakeholders. 

One of the panels at the closing conference was dedicated to the topics of modern-day challenges with regards to the media, freedom of speech, disinformation and impartiality standards. The panel was led by the head of the Audiovisual Media Service Department of the Communications Commission, Ivane Makharadze, and included Media Academy director Shorena Shaverdashvili, Georgian Public Broadcaster director Tinatin Berdzenishvili and Journalism Resource Centre chairwoman Natia Kuprashvili.   

Panelists Marika Sikharulidze, who is an expert at the Teachers’ Professional Development Centre, the Dean of Business and Technology University Nino Enukidze, Senior Project Officer of the Council of Europe Tamar Kobakhidze and ythe representative of “People in Need” Ana Kochua evaluated the media literacy hub and related projects. The panel was moderated by head of the Media Literacy Department of the Communications Commission, Maka Dakhundaridze, who also presented the new media literacy platform that was funded by the Council of Europe Office in Georgia. 

In accordance with the UN General Assembly Resolution, the Communications Commission organized the Media Literacy Week in Georgia for the first time. The global Media Literacy Week aims to raise awareness about the media literacy needs and roles in UN member countries. Together with the Communications Commission,the Ministry of Education and Science, National Centre for Professional Development of Teachers, Information Centre on NATO and EU, UNICEF, EU, international experts, NGOs, universities, and schools were involved in the media literacy week . During the week, various educational and awareness-raising events were held for target groups, including school pupils, students, and teachers, in Tbilisi and the regions.
