Communications Commission Launches the Media Literacy Week

The Communications Commission is organising the media literacy week in Georgia on 25-29 October. Georgia was one of the co-sponsors of the UN resolution on the global media literacy week, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 25 March 2021. According to the resolution, the global media literacy week will be held annually during the last week of October.   

The media literacy week aims to raise awareness about the importance of media literacy as well as related challenges inUN member countries. During the week, the Communications Commission, which is responsible for developing the media literacy policy in Georgia, together with various local and international organisations and state agencies, will organise important events to help develop media literacy in the country. 

Together with the Communications Commission, the Ministry of Education and Science, National Centre for Professional Development of Teachers, Information Centre on NATO and EU, UNICEF, EU, international experts, NGOs, universities and schools will be involved in the media literacy week. 

The media literacy week has been launched  with a two-day conference jointly organised by the Communications Commission, Ministry of Education and Science and the National Centre for Professional Development of Teachers. Participants include international and local organisations and state agencies. 

The media literacy week will include a joint event organised by the Communications Commission and UNICEF, which involves a discussion with high school students on the subject of media literacy. Furthermore, the Commission will train students of Samtskhe-Javakheti State University and the beneficiaries of Children’s Village in Tbilisi and Kutaisi in detecting fake information. As part of the joint joint project of the EU Delegation to Georgia and the Communications Commission titled “The Challenge of Disinformation: Developing Critical Thinking in Schools,” training will be held for teachers from public and vocational schools in Tbilisi, Racha-Lechkhumi and Imereti. The Information Centre on NATO and EU will also hold informational meetings with teachers and students in the regions. The Media Academy of the Communications Commission will hold a seminar for students studying journalism, titled “Broadcasting Policies of the Georgian Television Media.” 

The media literacy week will conclude with a closing conference, where participants will discuss the current challenges related to the development of media literacy in Georgia, summarise the implemented activities and outline future plans. Topical issues on the agenda will include disinformation, online safety, hate speech, freedom of expression and media impartiality standards. 

During the closing conference, the Media Literacy Department of the Communications Commission will present the national online media literacy platform that was established with the support of Council of Europe Office in Georgia.. The platform was developed to bring together the educational and cognitive resources of all organisations working in the field of media literacy and raise public awareness about media literacy.
