Communications Commission to Train Additional 200 Teachers in Fighting Disinformation

The Communications Commission continues to train public school and vocational college teachers in tackling disinformation. The project, titled “The Challenge of Misinformation: Developing Critical Thinking in Schools,” has been renewed due to high demand from teachers. Training sessions shall take place over the course of two months in 10 regions, including including the regions with large ethnic minority populations. Up to 200 additional teachers will be trained in Tbilisi, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Racha-Lechkhumi, Zemo Svaneti, Adjara, Guria, Imereti, Samegrelo-Kvemo Svaneti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Kvemo Kartli and Shida Kartli.

The first training was held for 16 teachers in Tbilisi, who learned about the negative impact of disinformation and anti-western propaganda, and found out about the mechanisms for tackling the spread of such disinformation.

The project, which aims to raise awareness about the impact of disinformation, as well as to develop media literacy and critical thinking, has been implemented by the Communications Commission with EU support since 2021. As of today, 45 interactive trainings have been held, and more than 700 teachers from over 400 schools and vocational colleges have been trained.

Teachers are trained with the help of a creative and interactive module developed by guest experts specifically for this project. The training module is based on modern approaches and covers important topics such as critical thinking, various methods of identifying false information and methods of validating information. The teaching process is led by experienced trainers. Certified teachers will put the experience obtained during the project into practice in order to develop critical and logical thinking skills among the pupils.
