Communications Commission upholds the Complaint from United National Movement against Imedi TV

The Communications Commission has upheld the complaint from the United National Movement (UNM) against Imedi TV and issued a record of administrative offence to the broadcaster. The complaint stated that Imedi TV refused to place political adverts submitted by UNM. The party twice asked the broadcaster to place adverts, but Imedi TV did not air the clips.

According to the legislation, a national broadcaster carrying out general broadcasting must allocate at least 7.5 minutes of its airtime every three hours free of charge, and place pre-election advertisement submitted by each qualified electoral subject equally and without discrimination, provided the advertising time for each electoral subject does not exceed 90 seconds during this period. In the electoral district(s) where a second round of voting takes place, the free airtime must be divided between the electoral subjects participating in the second round in proportion to their representation in the respective electoral district in the second round.

By refusing to place pre-election advertising, Imedi TV violated Articles 761.21, 761.22, 186.3 and 186.5 of the Election Code. Based on the said violations, the Communications Commission issued a record of administrative offence to the broadcaster.
