Ekaterine Imedadze Talks about the Potential of Georgia’s Digital Economy at the Digital Transformation Forum

The Georgian Information and Communication Technology Cluster, with the support of the USAID Economic Security Programme and other donor organisations and partners, has organised the Digital Transformation Forum, which aims to maximise the country’s digital capabilities. Commissioner Ekaterine Imedadze took part in the opening event together with Mission Director for USAID John Pennell, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Irakli Nadareishvili, Vice-President of Georgian National Bank Nikoloz Gagua and CEO of Skills Agency of Georgia Tamar Kitaishvili.

During her speech, Ekaterine Imedadze emphasized the importance of the Digital Transformation Forum and noted that one of the main topics of the event is inclusive digital transformation, which addresses the topical issues in the telecom industry today. Furthermore, she highlighted the role of the Communications Commission in the development of Georgia’s digital economy.

“The digital service sector, which is built on the telecom industry, is the most ‘global’ segment in this field. I believe that the telecommunications sector has a crucial role to play in developing the digital economy, realising our country’s digital potential and establishing an advanced global position in this field, because digital services must pass through the telecom infrastructure. In its role as the industry supervisor, the Communications Commission views the opening of the telecom market, enabling access to the telecom infrastructure, creating a general framework for sharing the infrastructure, as well as realising our country’s geopolitical advantages and our flexible and harmonised regulatory environment as our priority tasks. In turn, these factors help stimulate investment in digital economy and create business models for innovative telecom services, which may become a niche in the development of the Georgian digital economy,” Ekaterine Imedadze stated during her opening speech at the forum.

The opening event was followed by a panel discussion on digital transformation and the role of Georgia in the global economy. The meeting discussed the necessary stages for the development of the digital economy, the elimination of digital inequality, and the importance of sharing the successful experience of those countries that have been able to take a leading place in the global market for the provision of digital communication services.

The Digital Transformation Forum will take place over four days. The Communications Commission, together with partner organisations, will hold three panel discussions on June 30 on digital literacy and the telecom industry, highlighting the challenges and achievements in the sector.
