“Find the Key” – New Media Literacy Project of the Communications Commission on www.mediatsigniereba.ge

The Communications Commission has launched a new project for children, parents and teachers titled “Media Key” – an online platform based on a Finnish model that focusses on positive content in movies and helps youngsters understand movies and cartoons. The project has been recognised by the European Commission and aims to develop critical thinking in young people through film analysis. The www.mediatsigniereba.ge platform already contains important information on more than 50 films, compiled by professional psychologists and legal experts specifically for this project. Each film comes with an individual description and recommendations regarding the potential positive impact of the specific film or cartoon on the child’s development.

The media literacy project “Media Key” helps parents and teachers determine which movies are suitable for their children and discuss the positive film content with them. Additionally, the project will help develop critical and logical thinking and media literacy skills among the youngsters.

www.mediatsigniereba.ge displays trailers of most popular Georgian and foreign films and cartoons that are divided into age categories. Information about the films includes description, recommendations and summary of positive and negative aspects of the content. The online platform includes movies in four age groups, including pre-school (4-6 years), primary school (7-9 years), 10-12 years and 13-15 years.

Each film summary includes several important aspects: the intended audience – who will be interested in the specific film and who will benefit from watching it?; the focus – what positive content does the film have, and how can it positively influence the child’s development?; and a detailed discussion of the film – what is the main theme that should later be discussed by children and their parents?

“Media Key” allows youngsters to use critical and logical thinking and media literacy skills to focus on memorable scenes that will later help them achieve success and develop themselves. They will be able to independently discover and verify the information, derive the necessary information from visual and audio content and evaluate the essence of media product.
