Georgian Schools Celebrate Media Literacy Day

As part of UNESCO's Global Media and Information Literacy Week, schools across Georgia marked Media Literacy Day. The event served to develop critical thinking among adolescents and raise awareness about media literacy and artificial intelligence.

Students of Tbilisi Public School No. 45 celebrated Media Literacy Day with educational activities. Together with their teacher, they created a media literacy information wall under the title “Safe Internet Starts with Me,” where they posted educational posters, essays and photo collages about cybersecurity, AI, media literacy and safe navigation of the online space. In addition, students discussed articles published on the internet, checked the relevant information sources and their reliability, and determined the truth. They also created media posts on the topic “What does it mean to be a reliable information user?” and discussed the role of artificial intelligence in the digital world. Afterwards, the students created educational resources on these topics together with their teachers. Students from grades VI-X of School No. 45 in Tbilisi took part in the activities.

As part of the Media Literacy Day, representative of the Media Literacy Department of the Communications Commission Mariam Gugulashvili held an informational meeting with students of Tbilisi Public School No. 166. The meeting discussed important issues such as the media and its functions; separating facts from opinion; methods of manipulation; methods of detecting disinformation; and the role of media literacy. After the theoretical part, the meeting was devoted to practical exercises aimed at developing media literacy skills, in which students had to distinguish between real and artificially generated photos. It is worth noting that Tbilisi Public School No. 166 incorporates media literacy in its curriculum as an elective subject.

The Communications Commission, as the body responsible for the development of media literacy in the country, has been taking part in the UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week for the past five years. Georgian schools have been celebrating Media Literacy Day for four years.

The UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Week has been held annually on the basis of the 2021 UN resolution, serving to raise public awareness about media literacy and its importance.
