Media Academy Seminar - “Broadcasting Policies of Georgian TV Media”

As part of the Media Literacy Week, the Communications Commission and the Media Academy have held a  seminar for students, titled “Broadcasting Policies of Georgian TV Media.” The seminar was led by journalist and screenwriter Ketevan Sadghobelashvili, who acts as a producer for the Georgian Public Broadcaster and heads the documentary studio Epoch.

Students received comprehensive information on issues such as how the TV media is being transformed, how journalists should act in a polarized political environment, why and how the media environment is becoming increasingly polarized, and which standards a responsible media outlet should follow. The seminar discussed examples of party allegiances turning the media into an effective tool in the fight for power. The meeting was moderated by the head of Media Academy Shorena Shaverdashvili.

“Party allegiances turn TV media into an effective tool in the fight for power. The higher the polarization level, the lower the prospects for civil peace. This presents a great challenge for the Georgian TV media,” Shorena Shaverdashvili told the students during the meeting.

The Communications Commission, which determines media literacy policy in Georgia, is organizing the Media Literacy Week on October 25-29. Georgia was one of the co-sponsors of the UN Resolution on the Global Media Literacy Week, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on March 25, 2021. According to the Resolution, the Global Media Literacy Week will be held during the last week of October annually.
