“Media Key” Grows to 100 Films and 40,000 Users

The “Media Key” project of the Communications Commission, which is hosted on the media literacy platform www.mediatsigniereba.ge, has already grown to 100 films and over 40,000 users. The “Media Key” platform is based on the Finnish model that highlights positive film content and helps teenagers understand movies and cartoons. The project has been recognised by the European Commission as helping to develop critical thinking in youngsters through film analysis.

www.mediatsigniereba.ge currently hosts information on 100 films, including 30 Georgian and 70 foreign films. The information has been developed by professional psychologists and cinematography experts specifically for the platform. All films are divided into age categories, and each of them has an individual description and recommendations regarding the positive influence that the specific film or cartoon can have on the further development of a teenager. The online platform includes movies in four age groups, including pre-school and primary school (4-8 years), 9-11 years, 12-14 years and 15-18 years.

This media literacy project helps teachers and parents determine the appropriate films for their children’s age, discuss them and examine the positive film content. Furthermore, the project helps the teenagers develop their media literacy, critical and logical thinking skills.

As part of the project, the Communications Commission organizes film screenings in schools and actively involves students in the film review process. Together with the Commission’s media literacy trainer, the teenagers discuss the main theme of the film, focussing on thought-provoking scenes that will help them succeed and develop in the future. They also discuss the main point of the film and evaluate the reliability of the information conveyed.

More than 100 students have already taken part in the “Media Key” film screenings. The Communications Commission will continue to organise meetings with the students in 2023.
