Media Literacy Day Celebrated in Schools Across Georgia

As part of UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week, schools across Georgia celebrated Media Literacy Day, which was organised by the Communications Commission. Students and teachers took part in a range of educational and practical activities aimed at developing critical thinking, distinguishing between genuine and false information, verifying information, and strengthening their knowledge of safe practices in the digital environment.

As part of Media Literacy Day, ComCom representatives visited Tbilisi Public School No. 133 and the 300 Aragvians Tbilisi Public School No. 75, where they attended educational and practical activities organised by students.

At Tbilisi Public School No. 133, 10th grade students delivered a presentation on media literacy for 7th grade students, sharing their knowledge of critical information assessment, fact-checking and identifying disinformation. Following the theoretical session, the students took part in a practical activity in which participants worked on distinguishing genuine information from false information.

The 300 Aragvians Tbilisi Public School No. 75 organised an exhibition featuring wall newspapers, thematic posters and educational comics prepared in advance by students. The works addressed the importance of media literacy, ways to identify disinformation, and responsible behaviour in the digital space. The exhibition also included comics inspired by this year’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week theme: “We All Play a Part – Media and Information Literacy for the People.” In addition, senior students conducted an educational session for younger pupils entitled “Check Before You Share!” The lesson covered information verification, identifying fake news, and responsible behaviour on social media. A role-playing activity, “Truth or Disinformation?”, was also held, during which students took on the roles of information disseminators, journalists, fact-checkers and information recipients, and discussed the risks associated with spreading unverified information.

The Communications Commission participates in UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week every year. This year marks the sixth time the event has been organised in Georgia by ComCom. The central theme is “We All Play a Part – Media and Information Literacy for the People,” emphasising that building a media-literate society and creating a safe information environment is a shared responsibility in which every individual has an important role to play.
