Media Literacy Day Celebrated in Schools

As part of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week, the Communications Commission marked Media Literacy Day in schools throughout Georgia by organising various activities to develop critical thinking among teenagers.

During the Media Literacy Day, teachers and students discussed the topic of fake news and its harmful effects. In addition, cognitive activities such as the preparation of informative banners and videos, group assignments, film screenings, discussions and simulation games were conducted for the youngsters using the educational resources provided by ComCom.

In some schools, students prepared team presentations and podcasts on media literacy issues. Furthermore, they organised an exhibition of posters on the impact of fake news and ways to detect it. Some schools even painted their yards on the subject of media literacy.

The 2023 Media and Information Literacy Week opened on 24 October with a meeting with teachers on the subject of integrating media literacy into formal education, followed by the Media Literacy Day. Other scheduled events include the meeting of “Hello Ruby” author and EC digital ambassador Linda Liukas with teachers and parents, a global media literacy hackathon for young people, and a public lecture for students by international media literacy expert, Professor Renee Hobbs. The Media and Information Literacy Week will conclude on 31 October with a summary conference, which will include panel discussions involving international experts invited by the Communications Commission.

The Media Literacy Week, which aims to raise public awareness about the importance of media literacy, has been held annually following the 2021 UN resolution.
