Media Literacy Week Opens with Two-Day Conference

The Communications Commission, together with the Ministry of Education and Science and the National Centre for Professional Development of Teachers, launched the media literacy week with a two-day conference. Participants included ComCom Commissioner Natia Kukuladze, Minister of Education Mikheil Chkhenkeli, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, the US Embassy representative, Director of the British Council in Georgia, and the representatives of UNICEF. The conference was also attended by the media literacy target groups – schoolchildren, university students, teachers and parents.

The aim of the conference was to discuss the existing challenges related to media literacy in Georgia. During the event, participants summarised the media literacy activities implemented in Georgia and discussed future plans. Experts talked about the media literacy needs and roles, highlighting issues such as disinformation, online safety, freedom of speech and media impartiality standards.

The Communications Commission, which is responsible for defining the media literacy policy in Georgia, is organising the media literacy week on 25-29 October. Georgia was one of the co-sponsors of the UN resolution on the global media literacy week, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 25 March 2021. According to the resolution, the global media literacy week will be held annually during the last week of October.
