Students trained as part of the media literacy contest “Truth or Fiction?” trained around 130 pupils of 9th, 10th and 11th grades at Tbilisi public schools Nº8, 29, 143 and 145 in media literacy. The students had taken part in the “Truth or Fiction?” contest, where they were selected as winners. Using materials from BBC Academy, students shared their methods of detecting fake news and verifying facts. Participants also learned about issues such as the different types of fake news, separation of facts and opinion, information verification methods, and fabrication of photos and videos.
The media literacy contest “Truth or Fiction?” is held by the Communications Commission to develop analysis, fact-checking and critical thinking skills among young people. The Commission has already held 6 editions of the contest for school pupils and 4 for university students, with a total of 700 youngsters taking part. Parallel to the contest, ComCom held around 190 seminars at schools and universities, training more than 4300 pupils and students in media literacy. In addition, 4 informational meetings were held for teachers, which were attended by up to 40 teachers from different Georgian regions.
