SpaceX to provide Internet through Starlink Satellite Constellation in Georgia

Georgian National Communication Commission member Ekaterine Imedadze and other representatives of the Commission held a meeting with a SpaceX representative to discuss bringing SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to Georgia.  During the introductory meeting, the staff of the Commission talked with the SpaceX representative about the current situation and prospects in the Georgian telecommunications sector, as well as the development of digital economy in the country. For his part, the SpaceX representative briefed the Commission officials on SpaceX's future plans in Georgia. The Commission and the Media Lab of the Media Academy also discussed the projects created by startuppers trained at the Media Lab.

Starlink provides high speed, low-latency broadband internet across the globe, including to locations where the internet has been too expensive, unreliable, or entirely unavailable. SpaceX has launched more than 2,700 Starlink satellites to date into low Earth orbit (LEO).

In the context of Georgia, Starlink is especially important and attractive for the mountainous regions and settlements that currently do not have broadband internet coverage. The introduction of Starlink will ensure access to high-speed internet for the population in all such geographical areas.

“We had an interesting and important meeting with the representative from SpaceX, who came to Georgia to gain first-hand knowledge about the telecommunication environment in the country. We provided him with detailed information on the current trends and future visions in the Georgian telecom sector. SpaceX is currently exploring its niches of interest on the Georgian market and is preparing for the commercial launch of Starlink operations in Georgia. I think this is a very important event for the country and the telecom sector. The introduction of Starlink will make satellite internet available in Georgia, which will open a window for future development of the innovative digital services market,” Commissioner Ekaterine Imedadze stated after the meeting.
